Lanzarote Rocks – Hot Holidays In The Canaries

Travel & Tourism | holidays-in-Lanzarote

Weird volcanic scenery. Wonderful beaches. Fantastic accommodation. Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands, offers all the right ingredients for a holiday abroad. And best of all it can be enjoyed at any time of the year – as like the rest of the archipelago Lanzarote basks in warm sunshine even during winter.

This great climate is the main key to Lanzarote´s success as a holiday destination. Allied to the islands proximity to the tourist markets of Northern Europe – with the UK and Germany just a four hour flight away.

But the island offers much more than just beaches and sunshine alone. As it has been endowed with intense and raw natural beauty in abundance by Mother Nature. Thanks to huge amounts of volcanic activity which rocked the island during the 18th century. Turning about one third of Lanzarote´s surface area into a lunar landscape. Which has since served as the backdrop for numerous science fiction films such as One Million Years BC and Krull.

Around 20% of visitors book all-inclusive holidays in Lanzarote. Which are not enormously popular with local retailers, such as bar and restaurant owners. As these deals do little to pump money into the local economy. So opt instead for a self catering break – as there’s no shortage of high quality apartments and holiday villas in Lanzarote available for rent. Flights to Lanzarote are also at their cheapest for many years – thanks to growing competition on the route between easyJet and Ryanair.

There are three main resorts for visitors to choose from – as well as the emerging destination of Puerto Calero. A luxury marina that stages prestigious regattas and is home to a couple of good quality hotels: The Hesperia and the Iberostar Costa Calero.

Alternatively there are loads of rural accommodation options available. Encompassing everything from simple village apartments through to chic rural hotels such as the Casona de Yaiza and the Caserio de Mozaga.

During the winter months visitors should plump for the resort of Playa Blanca in the south. As they will almost certainly experience better weather here – thanks to the island’s pronounced microclimate. Playa Blanca also offers wonderful beaches, good restaurants and a very relaxed and laid back ambience. Enhanced by the presence of the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura just across the water – which can be reached easily on the regular ferry service that departs hourly from the harbour area.
