Pompeii Tours Taking A Toll On Uncovered Artifacts

Pompeii tours from Rome

The city of Pompeii was lost for over 1,500 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1599. Since that discovery, its excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the daily life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire. This still partially buried Roman town-city near the modern Italian city of Naples is in the Campania region within the territory of the commune of Pompei.

Pompeii, along with it’s sister city Herculaneum, was destroyed and completely buried during a two day long catastrophic volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The eruption buried Pompeii under 4 to 6 meters of volcanic ash and pumice snuffing out the lives of its inhabitants mainly from the intense heat the followed the first eruption and not from the actual lava flow that ensued.

In 2008, Pompei tours were attracting almost 2.6 million visitors per year, making it one of the most popular tourist sites in all of Italy. It is part of a larger Vesuvius National Park and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997.

To stop the wear and destruction associated with tourism, the governing body for Pompeii, the Soprintendenza Archaeological di Pompei, have begun allowing Pompeii tours to also visit cities such as Herculaneum and Stabiae as well as the Villa Poppaea, to encourage visitors to see these sites and reduce pressure on the more fragile artifacts in Pompeii.
