The city of Pompeii was lost for over 1,500 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1599. Since that discovery, its excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the daily life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire. This still partially buried Roman town-city near the modern Italian city of Naples is in the Campania region within the territory of the commune of Pompei.
Pompeii, along with it’s sister city Herculaneum, was destroyed and completely buried during a two day long catastrophic volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The eruption buried Pompeii under 4 to 6 meters of volcanic ash and pumice snuffing out the lives of its inhabitants mainly from the intense heat the followed the first eruption and not from the actual lava flow that ensued.
In 2008, Pompei tours were attracting almost 2.6 million visitors per year, making it one of the most popular tourist sites in all of Italy. It is part of a larger Vesuvius National Park and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997.
To stop the wear and destruction associated with tourism, the governing body for Pompeii, the Soprintendenza Archaeological di Pompei, have begun allowing Pompeii tours to also visit cities such as Herculaneum and Stabiae as well as the Villa Poppaea, to encourage visitors to see these sites and reduce pressure on the more fragile artifacts in Pompeii.

We arrive to the land of 1000 languages and 1000 gods. At the intercontinental, the women in my group are welcomed with marigolds and branded with the typical red dot on our foreheads. This hotel is an oasis of luxury in a polluted city of 14 million people. Two days are spent touring Delhi. The obligatory sites include Gandhi’s Tomb and many UNESCO World Heritage Sites. No where else have ancient traditions blended with the modern on a scale so evident as in Delhi. Fat sacred Brahma bulls block traffic creating delays. In this Hindu land, cows rule. Dogs, monkeys and children cross at their own risk.

Do you plan to get UK family holidays? If you are looking at options for UK family holidays, you may find that riding around on the steam trains of Wales is a great way of including some kids’ day trips that you will love too. Whether you are thinking of UK family breaks, Wales has a number of historic railways that are either designed for visitors or have been converted for this purpose after previously serving as passenger lines or ferrying slate from quarries. One of the many reasons the history of bundled travel packages has been so popular for UK residents is due to the fact that many are looking to escape their wet, cold, northern island weather in exchange for tropical island weather and sunshine. In the past, before bundled holidays were a popular commodity, clients had no choice but to book their travel arrangements separately. For weekend breaks in the UK along with your family, coastal resorts such as Butlins or Center Parcs with its multiple options for activities are a good choice.
The important thing to remember is to get your bookings made sooner rather than later as places are being filled up at a rapid rate. With onsite shops to allow you to finish off your shopping and themed events going on throughout the day making any trip to the holiday parks a thoroughly enjoyable one that every member of the family will love, whatever their age. It may seem early to start the Christmas plans but as the rest of the year has flown by, the next 10 weeks are likely to do the same and you do not want to get to the beginning of December before you start planning as this often results in a considerable amount of stress and hassle. A trip there could be one of your presents to the family holidays, and it will be one they will remember for all the right reasons.
